We pray for peace in our world.

CELEBRATING SUCCESSES

Please plan to join us next Wednesday evening, June 4, at 7:00 p.m. in St. Michael Hall as we celebrate the careers of Mrs. Diane Doyle and Mrs. Barbara Harris. Both Mrs. Doyle and Mrs. Harris will be retiring from teaching at the conclusion of this 2013 - 14 school year and we want to honor and thank them for their dedication, hard work and devotion to ICS!

Mrs. Doyle and Mrs. Harris will be missed but we are excited for the opportunity that they will have to spend more time with their families, respectively! May God continue to bless them in this next phase of their lives.

We hope to celebrate with you and them on Wednesday June 4!

HOME

Today's quote was submitted by Mrs. Peach (Caitlin, Grade 7). It reads, "Home. I like my home. My home is great. I love my home. Ahhhh! home."

Have a great quote about our school's theme, HOME, for our final newsletter next week? Send it to: icsmzele@icstampa.org

YEARBOOKS

2013 - 14 ICS Yearbooks can still be purchased from the School Office for $35.00. Checks should be made payable to Incarnation Catholic School.

Students will be permitted to have ICS Yearbooks signed during the final week of school (June 2 - 6). Contact the Main Office for details.

PERSONNEL UPDATES

As was revealed above, Mrs. Barbara Harris will be joining Mrs. Doyle in retirement at the end of this school year. We are excited for Mrs. Harris and her opportunity to spend more time with her husband, sons and grandchildren, but are saddened by her upcoming departure. Please pray for Mrs. Harris and congratulate her on her retirement (and join us on the 4th).

Also, Mrs. Vickie Glaum, 2nd grade teacher, has made the decision to leave ICS next year so that she, too, can spend more time with her family and children. We thank Mrs. Glaum for her work this past year. Please pray for Mrs. Glaum and her upcoming transition as well!

Along these lines, this leaves us with only one full-time classroom teacher in first - fifth grades at this time. As enrollment increases over the summer in these grade levels and surpasses 30 students, a search for a second full-time classroom teacher for that particular grade will ensue. In this way, the ceiling before expanding from one to two sections for grades 1 to 5 is 30 students. Any first - fifth grade classroom that remains one section but has more than 25 students will have part-time aide access.

This formula keeps us well within our accreditation limit of 35 students in one classroom from grades 1 - 8. Of course, this is a very simplistic view of staffing and the actual formula is much more complicated and includes many more factors besides just the number of students for any particular grade level. Please trust that ICS is committed to providing the most AMAZING Catholic education possible and that we fully anticipate the need to add at least two full-time teachers across grades 1 - 5 for next year. This current strategy, though, will allow us to purposefully hire based on actual instead of projected need.

Finally, in addition to a full-time Media Specialist to replace Mrs. Doyle, ICS is currently looking for a part-time VPK (Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten) Director. This additional faculty member will help us to increase the number of students in our PreK program and work toward establishing a 3 year old program for the 2015 - 16 school year.

USED UNIFORM SALE

Our Used Uniform Sale will be held on 6/5 and 6/6 from 7:00 - 8:30 a.m. in St. Michael Hall. For details contact the Main Office.

THEME 2014 - 15

Next year's theme has once again been created by the rising 8th grade class (our current 7th graders). Volunteers from the ICS Class of 2015 have met with ICS Administration over the course of the past two months to brainstorm and design the theme for the 2014 - 15 school year.

As usual, next year's theme will incorporate scripture and this group of current 7th graders are hard at work creating next year's spirit shirt.

The theme for next year will be revealed after the final Mass of the school year, next Friday June 6.

Prepare to be inspired and on fire!

CELEBRATING SUCCESSES

As a way to celebrate the wonderful success of our Household / Priory System and to commemorate our Irish Cup Championship, all students will be permitted to dress in their Priory t-shirts with PE shorts or jeans and sneakers for Tuesday May 27.

The main idea behind the Irish Cup Championship was for students to have to work together in order to be successful in any and all of the events. Congratulations to our 8th, 5th and 2nd graders who served as grade level leaders in their respective groups. Their leadership and positive energy helped to carry us through the day.

Congratulations to all teachers and students for their efforts with Households / Priories this year. This initiative allowed our school to deepen our faith, enhance school spirit and promote academics. Using a formula for all families to be successful - eating, praying and playing together - our ICS Households afforded our school opportunities to grow closer together as a FAMILY!

GO IRISH!

STUDENT CENTERED

One of our faculty's twelve AMAZING Teaching Pillars states,

"Students are the center of the classroom - instruction must be varied and differentiated."

It is in this spirit that students were given problem-solving tasks during the Irish Cup Championship. These hands-on, group activities allowed for all students to be actively involved in the day's academic challenges. Additionally, students will be engaged in providing feedback about our Inaugural Irish Cup Championship. This feedback will allow us to tweak the Cup for next year and beyond.

Furthermore, it is in this spirit that a group of ICS 7th graders have assembled to create our ICS theme for the 2014 - 15 school year. Similar to the past three years and their respective themes (Be Heroic, RUN, and HOME), next year's theme is the product of a collaborative student effort. Rising 8th graders (current 7th graders) have been meeting for over a month to brainstorm next year's theme, select a scripture passage that aligns with it, identify a song(s) that fit with it, and design a t-shirt that will help to celebrate it.

Next year's theme will be revealed after Mass on Friday June 6, our last of school.

Prepare to be inspired - ICS students are AMAZING!

MRS. DOYLE'S RETIREMENT PARTY

Please plan to join us Wednesday June 4 at 7:00 p.m. in St. Michael Hall to thank Mrs. Diane Doyle for all of her hard work and dedication to Incarnation Catholic School. Light refreshments will be provided. We hope to see you there!

EOY

As we near the end of the 2013 - 14 school year, please note the following end of the year items:

-Please make current all financial obligations to the school - tuition, aftercare, background screening, commitment hours, etc.

-Start to consider how to prevent the Summer Slide. Students who do not stay engaged academically over the summer lose at least six months worth of progress. This means that a student who finishes 4th grade at a beginning of 5th grade level, will regress to a mid 4th grade level if no academic tasks are completed over the summer. Consider using these free online tools: http://www.myon.com/ and https://www.khanacademy.org/ as ways to keep students engaged intellectually.

You should also consider educational apps for your mobile devices / tablets and giving students a minimum amount of minutes each day that they must spend utilizing these educational resources.

-It's never too late (or too soon) to begin new habits. Don't wait until next year to make a more consistent effort to arrive to school on time. Don't put off getting students some remediation until the summer begins. Don't delay your student is in the next grade to establish better study habits and routines. Make these changes now to maximize their effects!

DADS CLUB

Many thanks to our ICS Dads Club and the golfers who participated in last Saturday's Golf Event! The weather was gorgeous and it was a great event!

IRISH CUP CHAMPIONSHIP

Our Inaugural Irish Cup Championship is set for tomorrow! Priory shirts are in. Oranges, Icees and other supplies are secured. SpirtFM is booked. The weather looks to be absolutely gorgeous for mid-May in Florida. Let the fight for the Cup begin!

The Irish Cup Championship is an all day event and will supplant and enhance what used to be field day. ICS Priories will compete in various events testing their academic and athletic prowess and their problem solving and teamwork skills! The schedule for the day is as follows:

Parents are invited to join us during the following times and at the following locations:

8:30 - 9:00, Mass in the Church
11:00 - 12:00, Academic Results in St. Michael Hall
1:00 - 3:00, The AMAZING Race, ICS Pavilion and Field

If you would like to join us for any of these events, please report directly to that location. So as to maintain the safety and security of our students despite making events open to the public, please do not cut through campus to go from one location to another. Please go around.

T-shirts for this historic event will be provided to all students. Shirts will correspond to the student's Priory from this year and can be worn on any ICS Spirit Day this school year and beyond. Please pay $5.00 to the Main Office to help offset the cost of this item.

Spirit FM will be on hand in the afternoon broadcasting live from ICS! Even if you can't attend, please be sure to tune into our Diocesan Catholic Radio Station, 90.5, between 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

We will have orange slices, freeze pops and Rita's Italian Ice available for all students. Please, however, consider sending a snack in with your child(ren) as you typically would. Please also remember that Friday will be our final Family Supper of the year; please ensure that your student(s) have lunch.

Finally, Priory t-shirts will be passed out to students on Friday morning so that all students can be uniform. Students should report to school in sneakers, PE shorts and an ICS shirt (PE or spirit). The Priory shirt can go over the shirt students wear to school or they will be permitted to use the bathroom to change.

GO IRISH!

AMAZING TEACHING = AMAZING STUDENTS

As a follow-up to today's "Celebrating Successes" section of the Newsletter, please consider how impressive it is that two ICS students won the Tampa Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest. In two short years, Mrs. Casanas has been able to re-imagine and restructure our Spanish program to the extent that two of our Middle School students, Lexi Velte and Maria Paula Owens, were able to win awards among all entries from the Tampa Bay area.

This is due in large part to Mrs. Casanas and her hard work and dedication to make our Spanish Program one of the brightest parts of our AMAZING school. It is also due to the collaborative and synergistic approach that our faculty members embody. Mrs. Casanas and Mrs. Carrier have partnered with both each other and with classroom level teachers to enhance many various subjects across all grade levels. This interdisciplinary approach is just one of the 12 AMAZING teaching pillars that our faculty have embraced:
An interdisciplinary approach, incorporating collaboration across subject areas, deepens student understandings.
AMAZING job, ICS teachers and students! GO IRISH!

HAPPY EASTER!

May the joy of the Resurrected Jesus Christ be with you always! Happy Easter!
In keeping with our tradition, we at Incarnation Catholic School:
Inspire life-long learning,
Challenge each individual to be a disciple of Christ, and
Strive to live our Catholic faith through service to each other and the community.
