ICS Summer Work 2015

Over the past five years, teachers have been hard at work developing unit plans that give structure to the diocesan standards and benchmarks. During that time, the Diocese of St. Petersburg has decided to adopt the Common Core Standards. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS), are a national set of learning expectations for college and career success that were developed by teachers, parents, school administrators, and education experts.  These newly adopted standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn in K-12 math and language arts. Expectations for each regarding summer work is outlined below.

Math:
To optimize student success as we transition to these standards, specifically in math, we are suggesting students utilize Khan Academy (khanacademy.org), a free online resource, which will help strengthen and enrich their math skills. Khan Academy is a website which offers tutorials, videos and online practice assessments for students. To successfully complete their summer math work, we are asking each child in the school to create an account as well as utilize the program over the summer. Instructions for creating an account are outlined below. Each student is required to select one of the coaches available on the list. In August, the coach will confirm a child’s work over the summer with their teacher.

The partnership between teacher and parent has at its focus the good of the student. With this and the school’s goal of inspiring life-long learners in mind, each child is asked to log on to Khan Academy to reinforce the skills they have been taught in the present grade level to better prepare them for the upcoming school year. For example, current third graders will work on reinforcing third grade skills. Once signed up, students can select their subject (current grade level under math) and complete the Mission Warm-Up. The Mission Warm-Up will allow a student to work at their pace as it pertains to their personal needs. To assist you in determining the areas of greatest need, a list has been compiled below to identify those areas by grade level. Mastery of these identified areas will occur at your child’s own pace, however, they are fundamental to their success in the 2015-2016 school year.

Language Arts:
In conjunction with Khan Academy, we are asking students to complete a Language Arts component of summer work as well. Please see below your child’s language arts assignment.

1st-3rd graders: Read at least 60 minutes a week on myOn. This amount is around 10 minutes a day for your child.

4th-7th graders: Read at least 2 Accelerated Reading books. Students will complete an A.R. test on each book upon returning to school.

Nevertheless, take time to eat, pray, read, discover and discuss with your children all the learning moments that become available to you during summer break. Have a great summer and we look forward to working with you and your child along their academic journey at ICS.

Getting started in Khan Academy :

View creating Khan Academy Accounts for children under 13:

In order to get full use of Khan Academy it is important for each student in the class to have a Khan Academy account. Students and one parent must create the account together.

Go to the Khan Academy website. http://www.khanacademy.org/

Click on Login in the upper right corner of the screen.

Create your parent Khan Academy account. Enter your email address. You will receive an email at your address with further instructions. (View and follow directions at the top of the page for Creating accounts for user ages 13+)

Click on the link that arrives in the email. Then continue to parent login. Enter your email address and the email password of your account. (This is your email account that you entered in step 3 and where you received an email from Khan Academy)

Create your child’s Khan Academy account by entering your child’s birthday, username and password. Make sure you and your child both know the username and password.

Check “Allow your child to add other coaches.

Click “Home” at the top right corner of the page.

Along the headings at the top, click “Coaches”.
